Cresting the Hill

On Monday I turned in my application for promotion to Associate Professor of Communication Studies here at UCLA. It’s been a long climb up a slippery hill, but I’m starting to be able to see the other side. I’m sure those around me will be glad to be able to mention “tenure” without my face turning ashen (and you’d be surprised how often that word turns up in conversation). Of course, I won’t know anything truly definitive until next Spring, at the earliest, and I’m still trying to get a few other important projects out the door. But regardless, this is a huge weight off my mind.

The above picture, by the way, was taken from an airplane window on our most recent trip to Indiana this summer. I was pretty impressed with how sharply the sunset light cut off on these mountains, which I think are near the Tetons (we were flying further North than normal to avoid a big storm). You can see the rest of the pictures from that flight here.
