Cover Me

The Princeton book cover is now finalized and should hopefully be showing up soon on the Princeton site and Amazon. I’m very happy with how this turned out, and look forward to seeing the real thing soon (FYI: the Princeton page is now showing a February 2010 availability date).

The New TV Season

Let’s see. Not a whole lot of promise thus far. Fox is still dead to me for canceling T:SCC, on top of all of its prior kill-happy choices. FlashForward on ABC seems pretty good, if a little by-the-numbers… they should have bloc-programmed it with Lost, though. I tried watching the Good Wife and NCIS:LA on […]

Post-APSA update

Well, I’m back from Canada, and imagine my surprise when I went through my mail upon returning and found out that Matt and I had received the award for the best article published in 2008 (for the “New Media and the Polarization of American Political Discourse” piece in Political Communication). Ironically, the IT & Politics section, […]

Summer Update

It’s been too long since I’ve done an update, but I’ve been waiting until I could announce big news… And I got tired of waiting. Things at UCLA (and in Los Angeles… and in California… and in the U.S.) are a little wacky right now, but let’s soldier on and update you all on what’s […]

Fair Science

I’m still slogging through the quarter (and still waiting for the final bureaucratic word from the university regarding tenure), but I thought I’d share one of the results of my daughter’s research. She was trying to predict which car color was the most popular in the U.S. using several different measures. DuPont tracks this data […]

Better Off Ted might be dead

…word on the street is that Better Off Ted didn’t get picked up as one of ABC’s early pickups, and has generally had disappointing ratings. Nonetheless, I remain hopeful that ABC will give this show some time to find an audience. More than any recent show, it reminds me of Andy Richter Controls the Universe, which […]

Spring Breaking

Long time, no blog. Boy, a lot has been happening since I last posted, hasn’t it? I’m still shocked at how quickly and massively the economy appears to have gone in the toilet in the past year, and obviously the election has shaken things up a bit. I didn’t make it to the real inauguration, […]

Thar She Blows

I meant to upload this earlier, but things have been crazy. The above pic is the tenure “file” itself as it gets ready to head out of the department and up the bureaucratic ladder. Note that the above was still missing about a year’s worth of teaching evaluations (the blue-striped things at the top of […]

Cresting the Hill

On Monday I turned in my application for promotion to Associate Professor of Communication Studies here at UCLA. It’s been a long climb up a slippery hill, but I’m starting to be able to see the other side. I’m sure those around me will be glad to be able to mention “tenure” without my face […]
